Across the Borders
Mexico and Canada are Upping the Ante
|
By JEFF HEILMAN
|
With the meetings economy continuing its cautious post-meltdown recovery, the North American group market finds itself at a dynamic inflection point, as Canada and Mexico are promoting their group offerings like never before. |
Principally through the Canadian Tourism Commission (CTC), Canada has long pioneered the strategic analysis of the impact of group business to its national economy, most recently in the CTC’s International Meetings, Conventions & Incentive Travel Strategic Plan 2011-2016 report.
Remarkably, perhaps, the rest of the world—the U.S. included—has traditionally lagged behind Canada in such in-depth self-review.

- Describe your event in Canada. With 3,500 attendees, PCMA’s Annual Meeting is our most important event of the year. We were very excited to showcase Toronto as a vibrant meetings destination, representing our first meeting outside of the U.S.
- Did you have any major concerns or misconceptions about the destination or holding an event there that were dispelled once it came together? One concern is that we would have difficulty with the currency translation and understanding GST/PST as it related to our budget.

San Francisco’s group tours offer just about everything
– A Meetings Focus Blog
By ZACHARY CHOUTEAU
Inspired by the endless stream of guided tours I’ve seen around our downtown S.F. offices, here are a few suggestions for guided group tours in the ‘City by the Bay.’ Whether you’re seeking to explore the city’s ‘summer of love’ days or just its eclectic architecture, there really is a tour for just about everyone’s tastes these days.
Sitting on the Rock of the Bay
There’s only one way to actually get onto Alcatraz these days, and it’s no longer by robbing a bank. Alcatraz Cruises (www.alcatrazcruises.com) leads regular jaunts from Pier 33 every day starting at 9am, and while this is certainly a magnet for tourists it’s also a quintessentially San Francisco experience. I will personally never forget the dramatic slamming shut of the cell-block doors, visiting as a 12-year-old tourist.
