- Doubletree by Hilton (301.589.5200; www.hilton.com) in downtown Silver Spring (formerly Hilton Washington, D.C./Silver Spring) plans to finish extensive renovations on guest rooms and its lobby by the end of December. The renovated hotel now offers 248 guest rooms and suites and 20,000 square feet of meeting space. The new lobby has two restaurants, a bar and multiple TVs that invite socializing and informal meetings.
- The Fillmore (301.960.9999; www.fillmoresilverspring.com) in downtown Silver Spring is a new 2,000-seat concert hall that provides live entertainment, including rock, Latin, blues, jazz, folk, country and spoken word. The 23,000-square-foot venue offers leading audio, lighting and video technology, as well as fiber optic connectivity to the American Film Institute’s Silver Theatre across the street.
- Go Ape (888.520.7322; www.goape.com) is now located in Rockville at Rock Creek Regional Park. It’s a treetop adventure featuring zip lines and obstacle courses—perfect for a corporate retreat or team building.
- Maryland Civil War Trails (www.visitmaryland.org) will feature the 1862 Antietam Campaign Trail for the 2012 Civil War Sesquicentennial Commemoration. The route is one Robert E. Lee took to cross the Potomac River into Maryland at Whites Ford as he moved troops toward Frederick. There are also several stops in Montgomery County on the Gettysburg Campaign Trail. Trail signs provide interpretation of significant activity at places throughout the county. The trails initiative is a cooperative effort among the Maryland Office of Tourism, Heritage Areas and Destination D.C. for the 2012 anniversary.
