Chalk up another story in the "who knew" category. This time it's our Close-Up piece on Sheboygan, Wis., and the "who knew" part has to do with its status as a surfing capital.
While preparing the piece I discovered that this Lake Michigan destination is nicknamed "Malibu of the Midwest"—it even hosts the annual Dairyland Surf Classic in late summer.
And late summer is an opportune time for the tournament, as peak surfing season begins then and lasts until April.
Tempted to catch a wave this winter? According to Sheboygan Tourism's website, "Water temperatures of 33 degrees and sub-zero wind chills with moving ice flows and icebergs create a winter adventure only seasoned, knowledgeable, veteran surfers will enjoy."
Maybe I'll settle for the smaller summer swells.
