For Good Measure

Now that key sustainability standards are out, how does one begin quantifying results?

By TYLER DAVIDSON

After years in the making—good things take time, after all—the APEX/ASTM Environmentally Sustainable Meeting Standards were released earlier this year, sharing 2012 with two other major sustainable event standards releases: ISO 20121 and GRI EOSS.

But now that you know what you’re supposed to measure to ensure more-sustainable meetings, how do you go about doing it?

Whether you’re a green meetings expert equipped with a slide rule and advanced powers of mathematical cognition, or just an average, everyday planner with a heart of gold and/or an organizational mandate to “go green,” the age of measurement is upon us.

Following are some key tips from sustainable meetings experts.

“The first thing to do is really reflect and document what you do today because you’re not going to mark any progress unless you have a pretty clear understanding of where you are,” says Sue Tinnish, a Kendall College assistant professor and principal of SEAL Inc. who is an authority on sustainable meetings. “I think the reality is it’s difficult—if not impossible —to go from 0 to 120 mph in terms of sustainability. Being able to mark your progress will help you build future business cases to know your progress as well as any costs or benefits.”

Take 10!

1. You mentioned water and bottles of water. I have attendees that do not like having water in anything other than water bottles for sanitary reasons. Have you used other ways of delivering water or do you request green plastics when you are having meetings?
Sure, you can use water bubblers and compostable cups as a second option. Only use this alternative if the cups will actually be composted though. Check with the facility and caterer.

2. Where can we download the APEX standards? Are they compiled into a single document?
You can access more information about the standards and how they are compiled from the Convention Industry Council website here.

3. I saw someone on LinkedIn state that they were a "Green Certified Meeting Planner.” Is there such a certification, because I've not been able to find any certification program for this.
At this time, the Convention Industry Council (and its members) do not have any certifications for green certified meeting planners, as the standards are just being published. A certification program will most likely be the next step, so watch for it in the next year. There may be another organization certifying green meeting planners, but I am not sure exactly what criteria they would be using if not the industry standards.
