Spotlight - Michigan

Avenue that is out of this world is the newest icon to grace the landscape in Lansing.

The Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum (www. broadmuseum.msu.edu), which some say looks like a spaceship, opened last November at Michigan State University.

Garnering national attention for its striking architecture, the Zaha Hadid-designed museum is named for the longtime Michigan State University supporters who contributed the lead gift for the museum.

The 46,000-square-foot building features a shiny stainless steel-plated exterior and houses exhibitions that “explore international contemporary culture through art.”

Planners can choose from a variety of event venues, including intimate galleries, the lobby or the entire museum for up to 750 guests.

The museum complements a wealth of facility choices in Lansing.

The 175,000-square-foot Lansing Center is the main convention and exhibition facility downtown, and Tracy Padot, vice president of marketing at the Greater Lansing CVB, reports that a number of smaller facilities have undergone minor updates and modernizations.

State associations like Lansing’s easy legislative access and central location, and proximity to a Big 10 university makes it simple for groups to find speakers and access other academic resources, according to Padot.

“Centrally located within the state, Lansing is the capital of Michigan and the home of Michigan State University, so many of our meetings and events center around those two things,” Padot says.
