Q&A with Joe Jaworski

What do you see as quintessential aspects of life in Galveston?
Galveston has wider streets, older and grander homes and a more historic seaport feel than any other city in Texas. The sunrises and sunsets are unequaled, and the constant, soothing sea breeze is a heavenly gift that combines with our Gulf and bay views to comfort visitors and residents alike.

What are some of your favorite ways to relax and enjoy the local scene?
I like to sit on my front porch or balcony and watch the families play in Adoue Park. I also enjoy driving out to the West End of Galveston Island to enjoy the natural beaches and wide open landscapes. In addition, I like to walk through our historic neighborhoods and observe the 19th century architecture.

What experiences would you recommend for attendees meeting in Galveston?
Take time to walk our Seawall, visit and walk around the Port of Galveston (Piers 19-24) and walk or do a driving tour through our East End historic neighborhoods and see the carvings made from our trees that perished after Hurricane Ike.

What advice would you give to visitors to get the most out of their Galveston experience?
Stay for more than one day. There are excellent hotels, bed and breakfasts and vacation rentals by owner to meet every budget. Visit some of the neighborhood, non-chain restaurants like Di Bella’s, Sonny’s, Sunflower Bakery, Mosquito Cafe, Mod Coffee Shop, Rudy & Paco’s and others to get a real feel for how the locals dine. And see a sunset or sunrise over the Gulf.
