As a progressive college town bolstered by a strong creative arts landscape, it’s not surprising that Madison, Wis., is home to a number of top-notch museums and galleries. What might surprise some planners and attendees, however, is the depth and diversity of these offerings.
“We are very appreciative of the vast array of facilities that we have here in Madison,” says Judy Frankel, public relations and communications manager for Visit Madison. “There is something very wonderful about hosting a meeting in an art museum or gallery that lends an amazing atmosphere to the event.”
Here is a closer look at some of the city’s best museums and galleries, and top experiences and settings for planners to ponder at each.
The Chazen Museum of Art
Located on the handsome campus of the University of Wisconsin, the Chazen is a gleaming modern wonder bursting with priceless works from countless mediums, countries and artists.
“The Chazen has one of the most unique university collections in the country,” says Russell Panczenko, director of the museum. “Admission is free, and we offer docent-led group tours of temporary exhibitions as well as the permanent collection to suit a wide range of interests.”
Among the legendary names displaying works are Joan Miro, Auguste Rodin, Thomas Gainsborough, Pablo Picasso and Grandma Moses, but the permanent collection of more than 20,000 works truly does span all continents and eras. Frequently changing exhibitions are also intriguing, and the museum’s artwork is bolstered by free educational offerings ranging from lectures and films to artist talks and receptions.
From September through mid-May, the Chazen even presents free chamber music concerts featuring local performers at an event known as Sunday Afternoon Live from the Chazen.
Absolutely Art
A combination funky shop, cool art gallery and lively community center, Absolutely Art shows off creations from about 200 local artists at its Eastside location. Perfect for a casual group stop, the artsy enclave offers the chance for attendees to purchase a creative keepsake or just take in the constantly changing art on display.
The highly sustainable venue recycles art supplies and even has one of its entrances along a popular bike path. Groups can enjoy a funky sculpture garden with a cozy seating area and occasionally take in a local artist creating an on-site piece, such as a vibrant mural recently added to an exterior wall.
Another promising possibility is a welcoming reception held on the first Friday evening of each month to tout the featured artist for the month. PageBreak
Madison Museum of Contemporary Art
With its iconic three-story glass facade and rooftop garden, MMoCA’s headquarters—part of the Overture Center of the Arts, designed by renowned architect Cesar Pelli—is a work of art in itself. Once inside, visitors will be wowed by the wealth of eclectic modern works as well as the many other creative offerings at MMoCA.
“We welcome groups and love to see their enthusiasm for the architectural space and the featured art,” says Erika Monroe-Kane, spokeswoman for MMoCA. “By providing free access to compelling contemporary works of art, MMoCA is a cultural retreat right at the center of Madison’ vibrant downtown, making it a perfect destination for visiting groups.”
Like the Chazen, MMoCA is host to frequent events, including the popular MMoCA Nights, held on the venue’s rooftop patio and showcasing live music, a cash bar and seasonal appetizers from the museum’s Fresco cafe. Spotlight Cinema is another worthwhile offering, showing off critically acclaimed films you probably wouldn’t find at the multiplex.
The venue operates its own private events program and has some memorable settings for artistically infused gatherings that include a rooftop garden and lounge, spacious lobby and a lecture hall able to host up to 230 for a seated affair.
The Wisconsin Historial Museum
A treasure trove of Wisconsin archives, mementos and artifacts, the Wisconsin Historical Museum sheds light on aspects of the Badger State ranging from domestic life to technology.
“Our tour guides really bring Wisconsin’s rich history to life,” says Ellen Pincus, the venue’s director of promotions and marketing. “You’ll be surprised by just how much there is to discover about this amazing state.”
The museum offers a wide array of custom tours, self-guided tours and group theater presentations, according to Pincus, who adds that possible options include exploring Wisconsin life, stories of railroading, the Civil War, the Great Lakes, the fur trade, Wisconsin’s native people and the popular Odd Wisconsin: Colorful Characters tour. Wisonsin Veteran’s Museum
Perfect for a military group or any attendees interested in American history, the Wisconsin Veterans Museum looks at our nation’s military conflicts ranging from the Civil War to the Gulf War—and at the brave Wisconsinites who have served their country in them.
“Tours at the museum are docent-guided and many of our docents are veterans, which offers visitors a unique perspective,” says Emily Irwin, spokeswoman for the museum.
Self-guided tours are also an option, and all tours are complimentary. The facility does ask for a two-week advance notice from groups, particularly in springtime when the museum is at its busiest.
Planners seeking a preview of the Veteran’s Museum can take in some multimedia presentations on the venue’s website, which are narrated by famed historian Stephen Ambrose and the legendary Gregory Peck.
The James Watrous Gallery
Housed in the Overture Center for the Arts and operated by the Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts & Letters, the James Watrous Gallery is named for the renowned artist and art historian who helped found the Chazen Museum of Art and instructed at the University of Wisconsin-Madison for more than 40 years.
The free gallery is open to the public and located in the colorful rotunda space on the Overture Center’s third floor. Displayed artwork is primarily modern creations from regional Wisconsin artists, running the gamut from photography to print-making to sculptures and mosaics. For groups seeking some creative inspiration, the Watrous Gallery delivers a dynamic and diverse array of colorful creations.
