Hotels are working with guests on shoreline improvements

Making a big difference to the environment is often the result of a number of small steps, and to that end some beach properties are rallying their guests to beautify nearby stretches of sand, low-key affairs that help give back without excessive planning or fanfare involved. The Shores Resort in Daytona Beach, Fla., is a good example of this type of effort.

“The Shores Resort & Spa has adopted a one-mile stretch of beach in front of our hotel,” says Susan Keaveny, marketing manager for the property. “Our Shores’ ‘green team’ hosts bi-weekly early-morning beach walks and all corporate, group and leisure guests are invited to attend. We also offer a dedicated Beach Walk as a part of CSR programming. Each team is responsible for collecting and sorting trash from recyclables, weighing each and documenting .”

To date, she reports, the endeavor has collected over 736 pounds of trash and 768 pounds of recyclable material.
