Q&A with Kwame Kwei-Armah
Artistic Director
Center Stage. Baltimore

What are your favorite quintessentially Baltimore experiences?
My No. 1 is walking from Center Stage to the Inner Harbor; I love doing that. I also enjoy going duckpin bowling with my son. The third would be going to see the lights in Hampden, the 34th Street lights. That is a must-do. I actually brought my family and visiting friends to go and see them.

Why do you think Baltimore is a great place for the performing arts?
Baltimore is great because it has a really, really top-notch percentage of artistic appreciators and practitioners. There is some serious world-class talent here. Numerically, it may not seem like much, but it really is. And I love producing art here because our audiences across the board in the arts are really discerning.

What are some experiences groups shouldn’t miss while meeting in Baltimore?
I would say go to the Walters Art Museum. I would also say go to the American Visionary Art Museum. And as the third, I would of course say go to Center Stage. In addition to visiting those, eat at the Helmand. And then experiencing Lexington Market. Those would be the things that I would automatically say to do.
