Outta Site: Small State, Big Offerings

The eclectic lineup of off-site venues available for group gatherings in Delaware reads like the offerings of a much larger state. Among the options are facilities with river, city and vineyard views, all memorable backdrops for events away from the host property.

DuPont Environmental Education Center, Wilmington
Located in Wilmington’s 212-acre Urban Wildlife Refuge is the four-story, glass-sided DuPont Environmental Education Center, which, according to Lauren McMahon, sales coordinator for the facility, is both a hidden gem and an urban oasis that’s well-suited for intimate gatherings of up to 120 people, including receptions and banquets.

“The three walls of windows as well as balconies provide extraordinary views of the Wilmington skyline and the riverfront from a unique vantage point,” she says. “During an event, attendees may spot a bald eagle or watch a resident nesting Osprey, and at an evening event you can watch a beautiful sunset.”

Biggs Museum of American Art, Dover
Located in the heart of Dover and overlooking the historic Dover Green, the Biggs Museum of American Art accommodates groups of up to 100 people for meetings and other gatherings, according to Stephanie Fitzpatrick, spokeswoman for the facility.

The museum, which is undergoing a capital improvement project, houses a great collection of American fine and decorative arts, including works by Albert Bierstadt, Gilbert Stuart and Childe Hassam, as well as examples of furniture by early-American cabinetmakers.

“If groups schedule in advance, we are able to plan staff-led tours of both the permanent collection and any current temporary exhibitions,” Fitzpatrick says.

Nassau Valley Vineyards, Lewes
Located just minutes from the Delaware beach resorts, Nassau Valley Vineyards provides easy access to area hotels yet offers an old world ambience, according to Peggy Raley-Ward, proprietor and co-founder of the winery.

“Nassau Valley Vineyards provides a unique setting for meetings and social functions,” she says, citing an array of facility choices that can accommodate groups of 20 to 400 people. “Offering a combination of interior and exterior locations offset by views of the vineyard or nestled in a wooded glen, functions at Nassau Valley provide beautiful backdrops yet all modern conveniences.”

The winery regularly hosts private parties, fund-raising galas, meetings and other events.
