Hip Hood - Avondale, Birmingham

Freshfully Market might be a good first stop when visiting Avondale. The place smells as fresh as the local fruits and vegetables for sale here, including Alabama strawberries when they're in season. A small on-site cafe serves coffee, smoothies and to-go sandwiches and salads for attendees with exploration on their minds.

Alabama's Crimson Tide, predicted winners of the BCS National Championship game this season, is celebrated at the 41st Street Pub & Aircraft Sales, where during college football season the bar's televisions are turned on for Bama ball. This popular local bar also features Birmingham's only shuffleboard tables, as well as dartboards, and is available for private events. Gluten-free beer and Moscow Mules are menu favorites.

At Avondale Brewing attendees will find delicious beers to toast business well done with their colleagues. Craft brews here include Battle Field IPA, Long Branch Scottish Ale and Vanillaphant Porter. The brewery also has a roomy upper story that's available for group gatherings.

Saw's Soul Kitchen (205.591.1409), a local favorite, is a great place to stop for a memorable Southern meal. The restaurant's menu features barbecued pork and collard greens served over a bed of cheese grits, fried chicken sandwiches, burgers, fried okra, fried green BLTs and banana pudding.

The Painted Shovel, a farming, gift and art store, is a must-visit for attendees when browsing Avondale. Here, they can shop for take-home gifts from a great variety of antiques, artwork, furniture, handmade and repurposed gifts, jewelry, T-shirts and more.
