Contrary to “digital detox” experiences that are becoming a trendy travel offering, Melia Hotels International debuted the Sol Wave House hotel in Majorca, Spain, billing it as “the world’s first tweet experience hotel.”
A study by PEW Research Centers reported that Internet users in the United States between the ages of 18 and 29 are the most likely demographic group to be active on Twitter, so creating a “tweet experience” hotel is a new way for Melia to target this up-and-coming market segment.
The trendy beachfront hotel has 184 guest rooms and caters to a young crowd by offering free Wi-Fi, an infinity pool, a 28,000-square-foot terrace where DJs spin and two high-tech wave pools where guests can try “flowboarding,” which mimics surfing.
Guests are encouraged to interact online using the #socialwave hashtag and to share goofy “selfie” photographs.
