ROCKPORT, Maine and BOLTON LANDING, N.Y.
The concept is simple…maximize beautiful outdoor winter settings by carving a lounge out of 18,000 pounds of ice. Okay, maybe not simple, but certainly unique. Last year, the Samoset resort in mid-coast Maine debuted Glacier, an outdoor bar and lounge carved entirely out of ice. This year, based on the success of the first-ever Glacier Ice Bar & Lounge, a second ice bar will be built at Samoset’s sister resort, the Sagamore in Bolton Landing on Lake George, N.Y., surrounded by the Adirondack mountains.
Two talented teams of ice sculptures and designers have been assembled at each resort to begin preparations for the ice bars after the holiday season is over. That will include carving and assembling 300-pound blocks of ice using chisels and chainsaws to create the bars, seats, tables, ice Luges, couches, sculptures and more. Everything in these cold sensory environments, with the exception of the toasty fire lamps and faux fur cushions, will be crafted out of ice. Both bars will also feature chilly, handcrafted cocktails, live music and special menus of light fare perfect for outdoor, winter dining.
Glacier Ice Bar & Lounge will premier at the Sagamore Resort on January 24th and remain open on weekends until February 2nd. Glacier Ice Bar & Lounge at the Samoset returns for a second year on January 17th and remains open on weekends until January 26th.
At both resorts the Glacier Ice Bar & Lounge is weather permitting.
