Tech expert, conference speaker and frequent Meetings Focus webinar presenter James Spellos recently helped launch the Whole Earth Calculator app, created by Meeting U., and EventMobi in partnership with anti-poverty think-tank Rock and Wrap It Up.
According to Spellos, “The app calculates the amount of food leftover from an event in terms of meals served and quantity of greenhouse gases not released into the atmosphere.”
Calculations are drawn from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
Rock and Wrap It Up has online resources to help groups find local organizations that accept food donations. Companies and meeting planners can use the app’s social sharing buttons to publicize their good deeds and corporate social responsibility.
During the 2014 Super Bowl, the National Football League used the app to track the recovery and donation of food that was not sold at concession stands during the game.
“An app of this nature can have a great impact on the hospitality industry by increasing awareness about hunger in this country,” Spellos says, emphasizing that “there are many environmental benefits to not dumping food into landfills.”
