Birthday candles in the Catskills

In 2019, Mohonk Mountain House, opened in 1869, will celebrate 150 years as one of America’s most enchanting group destinations. As the 265-room Victorian castle blows out 145 candles this year, other venues are commemorating milestones across the Catskill region.

Turning lucky 13 last month, the nearby 26-room Minnewaska Lodge is a buyout magnet for groups. Backed by the 1,200-foot Shawangunk Ridge, this casual retreat now features a popular outdoor fire pit.

Since debuting as “Austin Powers in the Catskills” in 2004, the Roxbury Motel has boldly gone where no hotel has gone before. Newly extra-dimensional with 10th anniversary refreshes including Wizard of Oz-meets-Keebler Elf-meets-Hobbit updates to the lobby and check-in areas, the 28-room fantasy is a tractor beam for groups. “The Roxbury may not change your life,” says co-owner Gregory Henderson, “but I know we created a place that makes people smile.”

Also celebrating a decade this year is the five-room ECCE B&B. Commanding a bluff 300 feet above the Delaware River, this award-winning haven is ready made for intimate gatherings. Says co-owner Alan Rosenblatt, who spent 25 years as Human Resources Director for a global professional services firm: “ECCE is perfect for executive retreats with unparalleled views, respite from daily distractions and a built-in facilitator!”

Just 20 minutes away is the site of the 1969 Woodstock festival, now home to concerts, special events and a mesmerizing museum at the superb Bethel Woods Center for the Arts. “As we enter our eighth season,” says CEO Darlene Fedun, “we’ll celebrate Woodstock’s 45th anniversary with year-long festivities featuring legendary and contemporary performers, programs focusing on the ideals of the ‘60s, festivals and more.”

In the Great Northern Catskills, group-friendly Sunny Hill Resort and Golf Course turns 95 this year—happy anniversary to all!
