Top attractions for Tahoe tradition

While some groups are likely lured by the draw of “new and hot,” others prefer the reliability of tried-and-true offerings. Here’s a look at a trio of time-tested Tahoe temptations.

Jake’s on the Lake, Tahoe City
A local favorite since 1978, Jake’s on the Lake is all about fresh food and a fun time. With sweeping views of both the lake and mountains, the restaurant has focused even more on locally grown produce since recently joining the Tahoe Food Hub—a local nonprofit dedicated to connecting small food producers with restaurants and other food providers.

Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival
This cultural gem, launched in 1972 on the lake’s west side, headed east to Sand Harbor State Park in 1976 and remains at that stellar locale to this day. Where else can attendees take in the Immortal Bard’s works with a glass of wine in hand and their toes in the sand? This year’s production is As You Like It, slated for a run from July 11 through Aug. 24.

Thunderbird Lodge
Originally built as the summer home of millionaire George Whittell Jr. in 1936, this stone mansion on the lake’s mid-eastern shore is a tremendous setting for a group experience—be it a privately led tour, an outing aboard its iconic wooden yacht or an enchanting dinner event. A quaint gift shop and stupendous gardens add to the venue’s allure.
