Latest & Greatest - Western Canada (April 2014)

Located in Vancouver's historic Gastown neighborhood, one of the city's most sought-after restaurants, L'Abattoir recently unveiled plans to build a separate, 2,400-square-foot dining space exclusively for private parties and groups. The space will accommodate 50 for dinner, 100 for stand-up receptions, and will include a state-of-the-art kitchen enhanced by planner-friendly add-ons like full audiovisual capabilities and tailored catering. Reservations will be accepted beginning in late spring.

The Calgary Airport Authority is constructing the longest runway in Canada. The new 4,267-metre runway, equivalent to the length of downtown Calgary, will be open for service later this year. The 2034-foot Airport Trail Tunnel will run under the new runway and will extend Airport Trail from Barlow Trail to 36 Street NE. It is expected to be completed in May.

The Agrium Western Event Centre is one of three Calgary Stampede legacy projects and will be the largest facility of its kind in Canada, totalling 150,000 sq ft. The Centre will host events from livestock showcases to concerts to trade shows and international gatherings. The $60-million-dollar facility is scheduled to open in July 2014 and will include 20,000 sq ft of multipurpose exhibition hall and a 2500-seat arena.

In Saskatoon, construction is underway for the Remai Art Gallery of Saskatchewan.  The Gallery will be a vibrant community gathering place and a key element at Saskatoon’s River Landing, important to the ongoing revitalization of south downtown. Slotted to open in spring of 2016, the facilty will have three times the area for exhibition space and two times the area for art education than the current gallery. In addition, it will have a café, gallery shop, and a 150-seat lecture theatre.

Victoria's newest culinary experience, the Victoria Public Market, opened last September in the iconic Hudson building. During off hours the space can be used as a dynamic off-site venue. The main event space is approximately 2800 sq feet, offering a unique venue for gatherings up to 400, while the adjoining community kitchen space adds an additional 600 sq ft for smaller intimate events under 20 guests.

In Winnipeg, the Canadian Museum for Human Rights will be the first National Museum established since 1967, and the first ever built outside of Canada’s National Capital region, when it opens this September. Designed by Antoine Predock and located at The Forks, the museum's meeting areas will include the indoor Stuart Clark Garden of Contemplation, perfect for cocktail receptions, and Buhler Hall, a grand foyer and gathering space for gala dinners and receptions.
