MESA, Ariz.
A groundbreaking ceremony was recently held for Sheraton Hotel Mesa adjacent to the new $99 million Cubs Park, Chicago Cubs Spring Training facility, and the newly developed Riverview Park. The full-service hotel will be the first commercial development on the site of approximately 140 acres.
“It is amazing that just four days ago we wrapped up Spring Training in Mesa, and today we are breaking ground on a new hotel," said City of Mesa Mayor Scott Smith. "This is just the beginning of what we envision for Wrigleyville West, which will provide a great experience for Cubs fans and visitors throughout the year."
The four-story, 180-room hotel will include two restaurants, a sports bar, a one-acre resort style pool area, spa and salon, sundeck, and state-of-the-art fitness center.
Massive Meeting Space
The hotel will boast an adjacent 26,000-square-foot conference center on the north side featuring a 12,000-square-foot carpeted ballroom with 20-foot ceilings that will allow for up to 1,500 attendees for meetings and events. A total of 37,000 square feet of flexible indoor/outdoor function space is planned for the hotel.
Signature outdoor function space includes a 300-seat wedding and banquet courtyard, and a 5,000-square-foot, second-story reception area. The project developer has also agreed to construct a minimum of 20,000 square feet of adjacent retail space and will be recruiting restaurants and other retailers.
“The new hotel and conference center will be another great addition to the (Mesa) Riverview area," said City of Mesa District 1 Councilmember Dave Richins. "I can’t wait to see the positive impact it will have by this time next year."
Further Hotel Mesa Details
Sheraton is a signature hotel brand that is part of Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc. The hotel will be owned and developed by BCY LLC, a Mesa-based hospitality group with several successful hotel developments in Arizona and Nevada.
“We are very excited to bring this hotel to Mesa," said BCY President Bob Yost. "Not only is it the first commercial development at Wrigleyville West, it is our company’s first hotel in Mesa."
When BCY meets its construction deadlines and other requirements along the north side of the project, the developer will have the opportunity to construct an additional 150-room hotel and 20,000 square feet of retail on the south side of the project.
“Visitor developments like those taking shape at Mesa Riverview help cement our city’s reputation as a leading, in-demand travel destination,” Visit Mesa President and CEO Marc Garcia said.
The Weitz Company, based in Phoenix, is the contractor for the project. Sheraton Hotel Mesa is expected to open in January 2015.
