Q&A with NFL Hall of Famer Thurman Thomas, Buffalo Bills running back from 1988-1999, including four consecutive Super Bowls (XXV to XXVIII)
How would you characterize the sporting culture of the Buffalo area?
The fan/sporting culture in Buffalo has always has been amazing and inspiring. We have a relatively small population and corporate presence compared to most other cities—but the high attendance we enjoy at Bills and Sabres games is a true testament to the passion of the fans.
Through the ups and downs, I was always energized by that passion when I played. Even now in retirement, I'm extremely grateful and appreciative of that support, as are my former teammates. Buffalo is truly a town of good neighbors and hard-earned, blue-collar pride.
What are some unique ways for visiting groups to connect with this culture?
Along with excellent retail options, both Ralph Wilson Stadium (Bills) and First Niagara Center (Sabres) host group events, with former and current players available to attend. Also, anyone coming to the Buffalo area for a Bills or Sabres game, or any of our other sporting events, should allow time to visit some of the area’s fantastic restaurants and historical sites.
What are some of the region’s outdoor opportunities for groups?
Outdoor enthusiasts can find almost anything they desire in Western New York.
Our area has world-class fishing, including salmon and trout fishing in the breathtaking area of the lower Niagara River. From the Niagara Gorge to magnificent Letchworth State Park, there are miles of tremendous hiking trails. For water enthusiasts, we have Lake Erie, the Niagara River and dozens of beautiful lakes and streams boasting excellent fishing, boating and personal watercraft adventure. Winter in Western New York allows for skiing and snowmobiling at several different venues.
With dozens of hidden gems in our area just waiting to be enjoyed by welcomed visitors, come and find out why I chose to make my home here.
