Founded in 2013, Trim Tab Brewing Co. has been building a loyal following in downtown Birmingham, where the beer scene is rapidly expanding. The name Trim Tab comes from a quote by American architect and visionary Buckminster Fuller that refers to the large Queen Mary ship and how adjusting a tiny piece on the edge of a rudder can significantly alter the course of a huge ship.
The company’s founders believe that small efforts can have large-scale impact, and they are using their craft brewery to elevate the local community and forge connections with their fellow Birminghamians, Southerners and other human beings.
With backing from the Barber Companies, founder Harris Stewart and his team moved into the space that previously housed the Barber Motorsport Museum, giving them plenty of room for future growth.
Venues spaces at Trim Tab include the tasting gallery, patio, courtyard and production area, plus it offers tours for groups of various sizes.
Kayan Danley, Trim Tab’s event coordinator, says the taproom is called a Tasting Gallery because it showcases art in both liquid form (beer) and in a series of rotating exhibitions by local artists. Though they don’t take gallery fees, they ask the artists to install their own shows, which can be on display for up to three months.
