Colorado Convention Center adds new public art

The Colorado Convention Center added eight new pieces by emerging local artists to its public art collection. The $235,000 investment was a partnership between SMG and the city of Denver.

Highlights of the new installation include Mindy Bray’s 9,000-square-foot mural The Heavy is the Root of the Light, spanning an entire wall behind foyer escalators, and I Know You Know That I Know by Sandra Fettingis, creating a pattern-filled corridor in one of the center’s hallways.

The Mile High City’s public art program was established in 1988 by an executive order from its mayor, directing 1 percent of any capital improvement over $1 million toward art. Over the years, Denver has installed more than 150 works through the program, including the famous giant 40-foot blue bear outside the convention center windows.
