Why do you think Oahu and Kauai are such great destinations for music?
As a musician and composer myself, I think inspirational elements that surround you (e.g. sky, sand, ocean, breeze, and those around you) work as great backdrop for creativity, enjoyment and relaxation. This obviously extends to residents and visitors alike, whether you are a musician or music fan. There's something magical about listening to beautiful harmonies, the serenading quality of a steel guitar or the strumming of a ukulele at a variety of venues where one can enjoy great live music performances on both Oahu and Kauai.

How is the music scene evolving here?
Based on the number of artists and new CDs/digital downloads that are being released, the music scene seems to be expanding across a variety of genres. Traditional and contemporary Hawaiian icons and young artists alike are releasing new material and compositions featuring Hawaiian language. Ukulele is alive and strong and continues to be redefined as a lead instrument as well. Other genres ranging from alternative, rap, reggae, R&B, hip-hop and rock are also on the rise here locally.

What are some common misconceptions about Hawaiian Music?
I think some people think Hawaiian music consists of Tiny Bubbles and stuff you'd hear only at a luau—not that there’s anything wrong with that—but with that said, Hawaiian music represents so much more. From rich stories and history, legends and lore, love and life—Hawaiian music encompasses all of the above and then some.

Do you have a couple of suggestions for unique music experiences on Oahu and Kauai for groups visiting the islands?
To experience some of the best of Hawaii’s music, there are a few venues that I would highly suggest.

Oahu:

  • Kanikapila Grille at the Outrigger Reef on the Beach has award-winning entertainment.
  • Corner Kitchen (about five minutes away from Waikiki) has great food and entertainment.
  • The Willows Restaurant features a live streamed weekly concert and television show (pakelelive.com) as well as a great buffet—open since 1944!
  • Hilton Hawaiian Village always has incredible music throughout its vast property (Tropics, Tapa Tower and big concerts on the Great Lawn).

Kauai:

  • Kauai Sheraton and Marriott Kauai Beach Club
