Art is making waves in Puerto Rico, which claims an impressive number of galleries and museums dedicated to local artisans and their crafts.
“Visiting a museum is always a unique experience for any group,” says Milton Segarra, president and CEO of Meet Puerto Rico. “For example, one of the most important centers of European art in the Caribbean is the Museo de Arte de Ponce.”
Your group can absorb some of this artistic energy through tours, classes and events set at local venues. Following are a few options.
An art gallery and school touting nontraditional courses, the nonprofit Art League (e-mail for info) in San Juan can accommodate up to 17 in two- to three-hour art classes.
“We can do basic drawing classes, pottery or landscapes. It depends what you want, says Juan Negroni, school director and promotions official at Art League.
San Juan’s Galeria Martinez Geigel (e-mail for info) offers basic drawing and painting classes, either in the artist’s studio or at the meeting site.
“I’ve done classes at the convention center,” says Miguel Martinez, owner of the gallery. “People relax and start sharing with others.”
Martinez offers on-site framing for attendee masterpieces and also sells his own serigraphs of Old San Juan.
The Art Museum of Puerto Rico houses more than 1,000 works by Puerto Rican artists, including etching, paintings, drawings, sculpture and photography. Before or after exploring its vast collection, groups can gather in one of several meeting rooms or make use of a 400-seat theater.
