Santa Barbara is a Millennial magnet

While the promise of fun in the sun is enough to attract Gen Yers, it’s really just the beginning of Santa Barbara’s tempting options for groups made up of this younger set.

“Millennials are attracted to Santa Barbara because it is a sophisticated, yet laid-back beach destination with a hip edge,” says Catherine “Cat” Puccino, national sales manager for Visit Santa Barbara.

One area that brings the hip is the Funk Zone, which is a great place to party without having to drive, and therefore very popular among Gen Yers.

“With so many tasting rooms showcasing Santa Barbara’s wine region, as well as a brewery, a distillery, the Santa Barbara Art Foundry and dining options all within walking distance of each other, Millennials enjoy spending time in the Funk Zone without having to worry about getting from one place to another,” Puccino says. “Located right next to the beach, there is a laid-back atmosphere that suits this generation.”

The Funk Zone is also home to The Wayfarer, an upscale hostel that appeals to Millennials. It opened in August with private and shared rooms, free Wi-Fi, an outdoor heated pool and a communal kitchen.

Puccino adds that there are several noteworthy trends for this demographic, including engaging with the destination via culinary walking tours such as Taste Santa Barbara and Eat This, Shoot That!, which combines food and wine tastings with lessons for taking better travel photos.

Two other trends with Gen Y call for smartphones, including the use of Visit Santa Barbara’s mobile website, which was designed for the younger on-the-go crowd that likes knowing what’s nearby based on current location, and Uber transportation.

“Uber is the Millennial’s taxicab,” Puccino says, explaining that riders are connected to safe and convenient transportation with the tap of an app. “Uber is popular with Millennials because it provides a fast, cashless and easy alternative to taxi and bus transportation.”

And of course, younger groups consider Santa Barbara’s waterborne pursuits a must when planning a meeting itinerary.

“Stand-up paddle surfing is a favorite among Millennials for the originality and adrenaline it brings,” Puccino says, adding that local outfitters offer guided outings.

“There is no better place to stand-up paddle than Santa Barbara, with gorgeous city and mountain views, and the high likelihood of encountering a sea lion or dolphin.”
