Detroit

  • Downtown Detroit’s Cobo Convention Center is in the final stages of its $279 million expansion and renovation. The new 30,000-square-foot atrium and 40,000-square-foot ballroom are now open.
  • The ALOFT Detroit at the David Whitney, a historic building downtown, opened in December with 136 guest rooms and more than 6,500 square feet of event space.
  • The Michigan Department of Natural Resources’ Outdoor Adventure Center is expected to open in July.
  • Olympia Development of Michigan recently broke ground on a sweeping transformation of dozens of underutilized blocks between downtown and midtown Detroit into a world-class sports and entertainment district. The new $450 million arena is scheduled for completion in summer 2017.

  • The Four Points by Sheraton in Saginaw, which has a full-service conference center that accommodates up to 200 people, recently completed a multimillion-dollar renovation.
  • A new Courtyard by Marriott is scheduled to open along the Saginaw River in late summer with two small meeting rooms.

Traverse City

  • The recently restored Kirkbride Hall is a newly debuted event space at The Village at Grand Traverse Commons. The 2,600-square-foot venue has 30-foot ceilings and is set in a scenic landscape.
  • The Hotel Indigo is on track to open this summer with conference facilities and 107 guest rooms.

Kalamazoo

  • The new 78-room Hampton Inn opened within walking distance of the Kalamazoo/Battle Creek International Airport in January.
  • Construction began last summer on a 97-room Hilton Homewood Suites, which is scheduled to open this fall. 

Mackinac Island

  • Grand Hotel will add the new Cupola Suites in 2015. Each suite will have a bedroom with a king bed, a parlor and the option of connecting to a bedroom with two queen beds.
  • Shepler’s Mackinac Island Ferry is adding a new ferry boat, the 85-foot Miss Margy, in July.
