Q&A with Leigh Melander, Ph.D. and Mark Somerfield, Founders and Owners, Spillian

What is Spillian?
Originally from Pennsylvania, we are two creative souls who have pursued diverse endeavors around the U.S. Mark has long been involved in lighting and scenic design for theater, opera and ballet, along with production and stage management, while my “shiny keys” include theater, music, writing, organization and development, and marketing.

After completing my doctorate in cultural mythology and psychology, I spent the last 15 years in Southern California helping individuals and groups use the power of imagination and stories to unlock new ideas and solutions.

Mostly based on conferences and online learning, I yearned for a place to situate all this creative energy. We found our place in an extraordinary 1880s Catskills mansion, set on 33 acres and originally a summer retreat for the famed Fleischmann’s Yeast family. We named it “Spillian” after the old English for “to play, to jest or to revel,” and it’s just that—a place to rejoice in new ideas and possibilities.

How can groups utilize the property?
The very antithesis of the institutionalized experience, we offer the eight-bedroom mansion, its full kitchen and the grounds as stage and canvas for a wide range of gatherings. Since opening in October 2014, we have hosted social gatherings and weddings for up to 125 people, reunions, corporate retreats and planning sessions, to name a few.

What sets the group experience at Spillian apart?
Think of Spillian as a museum-quality Catskills great camp where you can expand, relax and play at will. For groups of 30 or so attendees, we can completely custom-design, co-create and concierge your event.

Based on your interests and goals, elements can include artisanal food and spirits, facilitated learning and group conversations, guided or free range hikes, live music and theater events, and art and cooking classes. Plus, we offer ever-evolving public programs based on imagination, myth and creativity, including weekend and weeklong workshops and themed events.

We are dedicated to the ultimate group goal—achieving and fostering positive, unexpected change and impact. Have a wild idea? Let us help you bring it to life.
