Miami Goes Mobile

Miami hasn’t just launched a few apps—try 11 and counting. There are apps for Miami Beach and Miami International Airport, a Miami-Dade Transit Tracker to help you with information such as which attractions are within walking distance, a Wynwood Tour Guide to one of the city’s hippest neighborhoods, a guide to Cheap Eats and Street Food, and the all-important Parking Panda to aid navigation in parking lots, garages and valet facilities.

But Miami’s commitment to technology goes far beyond mobile applications.

“We’re becoming a tech hub,” says Barry Moskowitz, vice president of sales for the Greater Miami CVB. “We’re creating an environment for technology, hoping to draw technology companies here.”

To that end, the city will showcase the second annual eMerge Americas  this May, hosted by the Technology Foundation of the Americas, a Miami-based group working to develop what they call the “technology ecosystem” in South Florida. The event will connect innovators and investors in a five-day conference of summits and workshops. Among the speakers this year will be author Deepak Chopra.

“We have always hung our hat on the connection to Latin America and Miami’s position as the gateway to the Americas,” says Xavier Gonzalez, executive director of eMerge Americas.

“From finance to healthcare to media and entertainment, Miami has served as a center for economic activity for the Americas and now it is a technology hub for the Americas, connecting South and Central America, the Caribbean and the U.S. and Europe.”
