What is the Galveston Historical Foundation?
The foundation is a member-supported nonprofit organization that owns or manages 16 properties and vessels on the island. Along with preservation, our mission is to educate visitors and residents about Galveston’s history and architecture, its maritime past included. Our properties and vessels provide authentic real historic venues for telling that story.
What events in the island’s past resonate with you most?
The island has a rich and varied history that includes everything from entrepreneurial ventures to disasters and resiliency—the stories are almost endless. Our most engaging episodes are the 1900 hurricane, the following 10-year grade raising, and the fascinating tales of the wealthy and underground legends that made Galveston Island a unique place to live.
How does Galveston’s history contribute to its appeal as a group destination?
Our historic island is one of the few places in the United States that allows visitors to connect with the past through our architecture and history. The island has one of the largest collections of late 19th century and early 20th century historic properties. Literally every street is full of large and small houses and commercial buildings that recall the vibrant community that developed here and continues to this day.
What are some ways groups can best experience Galveston’s heritage?
Visits to our sites and/or special events allow groups to see the diverse history and architecture on Galveston, while self-guided, docent-led, step-on and special small group tours introduce the extraordinary stories of the people and places of the island. We are increasing our ways to experience Galveston’s history with more opportunities forthcoming in the next year.
