Fabulous Fairways

As Los Cabos rebuilds following the aftermath of Hurricane Odile, one area of recreation is making a notable rebound.

Directors of golf at Cabo’s leading courses had reported only minor erosion, cactus loss and sand intrusion caused by the storm. The main courses reopened starting last October through mid-December. There are also two additional courses that opened last year, El Cardonal at Diamante, which was designed by Tiger Woods. The other is Quivira Golf Club, located in the Quivira Development near Cabo San Lucas.

"Most golf destinations worldwide are contracting, not expanding, yet Los Cabos has forged ahead with new developments, including new courses by two of the sport's most legendary figures: Jack Nicklaus at Quivira and Tiger Woods at El Cardonal,” says Brian McCallen, golf adviser for the Los Cabos Tourism Board.

The addition of two courses brings the total number of golf courses in Los Cabos to 14.

Groups can now book El Cardonal, which opened last December. The layout follows what is described as an Old California motif and marks the architectural debut of Tiger Woods, who maintains a residence at Diamante.

El Cardonal is a 7,363-yard, par-72 layout that features an ocean view from every hole.

Bunkers have been placed by Woods to create strategic options throughout the course. The course was designed to accommodate a wide range of golfers.

It was also announced at the grand opening that Woods will return to build a second course at Diamante.

At Quivira Golf Club, all 18 holes have ocean views. A game starts at sea level, climbs the cliffs and dunes to 300 feet above sea level and drops back down to the beach. The course was named by Golf Magazine as The Best New International Golf Course 2014 and by Golf Inc, as The 2014 Development of the Year.

Quivira specializes in group tournaments. There is an oceanfront driving range, 18-hole putting course, clinics and private lessons, group discounts on green fees, and an oceanfront clubhouse with a full-service restaurant and boardroom for meetings. The group leader can play for free when they bring a group of 20 rooms or more and stay a minimum of three nights.

The Quivira development is also home to Pueblo Bonito Pacifica Resort & Spa and Pueblo Bonito Sunset Beach Resort & Spa.
