Surf’s Up in Kawela Bay

After watching surfers at Turtle Bay and reveling in the cultural cool at Surfer, The Bar, we took to the waves at neighboring Kawela Bay.

A private lesson with former world champion surfer Hans Hedemann was a great way to get beginners excited about the sport and help experienced surfers polish their skills. Following a beachside lesson on technique, Hedeman had us paddling out to conquer waves in no time, and after a few unsuccessful attempts, I found myself miraculously standing up on the board to ride a wave or two—I was definitely hooked.

Hedemann works with groups of varying sizes at his Turtle Bay Resort-based school, as well as at his location in Waikiki.

At Kawela Bay, Hedemann also engaged us in kayaking, outrigger canoeing and stand-up paddle boarding.
