Meetings Focus asked several beachfront CVBs to highlight a favorite local off-site location.

Virginia Beach, Va.

Doc Taylor’s Restaurant is located in a building once recognized as “the pink motel,” and also the former spot where the actual Doctor Taylor set up practice and residence.

It now serves breakfast and lunch, and Bertka advises that groups arrive early to take part.

Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Fat Harold’s Beach Club is said to have originated South Carolina’s state dance, referred to as the “Carolina Shag,” or simply “the shag.” The dance is recognized in national and international dance competitions in the U.S.

The venue hosts nightly DJs and even offers “weekly shag lessons.”

Wilmington, N.C.

Squigley’s Ice Cream & Treats has been serving its 4,050-plus flavors of homemade ice cream to beachgoers for over 19 years. The quaint Carolina Beach venue was built in the 1930’s as a private home with a detached Model-A garage, and has developed quite a history ever since, even becoming occupied by soldiers during WWII. It is open Easter through Halloween.

Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, Ala.

Lucy Buffet’s Lulu’s is a colorful, family-friendly establishment, featuring live entertainment, a menu variety that includes gluten-free and allergy-friendly options, and an on-site ropes course, arcade and gift shop to provide additional distractions.

Galveston, Texas

La King’s Confectionery is an old-fashioned sweets shop that serves homemade ice cream, fudge, candy and other treats. It is famous for its salt water taffy and on most days during the tourism season, groups can watch a live demonstration from the master candy maker.

South Walton, Fla.

The Red Bar in Grayton Beach is described by Peters as “kitschy dive-bar” meets “world-class restaurant,” with live music on par with what could be found in New Orleans or Memphis. Menu items include crawfish and shrimp, panne chicken and mashed potatoes, and a fish of the day option.

Tybee Island, Ga.

Tybean Art & Coffee Bar claims to offer the “best coffee on Tybee Island” and it also features a selection of artwork from local Georgia crafters. The coffee bar is located within the Tybee Oaks shopping area, which features several other eclectic shops and restaurants.
