Key Notes: Hitting Its Stride (Sept. 2015, Texas)

In step with its larger-than-life persona, the Lone Star State sits tall in the saddle when it comes to economic growth and a bustling meetings industry.

For this year’s edition of Meetings Focus Texas, Jeff Heilman leads us on a tour of everything from high-tech hubs to late-night diversions, proving the diversity of the state’s talents and allures.

“Favorable Forecast” details the steady rise in group business and how it is spurring expansion of group-related venues across the state. Also featured is a Q&A with Alex Cabanas, president and CEO of Texas-based Benchmark Hospitality International, looking at his view of the current group market.

When it comes to nightlife, Texas turns as much to its old dance halls as its burgeoning new entertainment districts, as showcased in “Party On.” Heilman profiles Lauren Bucherie, director of music and social programming for Austin’s Hotel Van Zandt, as well as Jeff Balfour, chef/owner, and Philippe Place, general manager, of Southerleigh Fine Food & Brewery at the hip Pearl Brewery complex in San Antonio.

“High Energy” delves into one of the Lone Star State’s top industries, from oil to sustainable energy technology, discovering venues in those fields that cater to groups. Heilman taps Barton George, at Office of the CTO, Dell, for insight into what makes Austin a leader in the group market.

Appealing to the Gen Y crowd, “Driving Force” looks at how Texas CVBs are catering to Millennials, with technology at the forefront. Heilman discusses the Gen Y strategy of the Hilton Anatole in Dallas with Courtney Morrow, marketing and social media manager, and also chats with trend-setting Paul Bonarrigo, CEO/winemaker at Messina Hof Winery & Resort.

For updates on new and renovated properties throughout the state, “Latest & Greatest” provides a full overview.
