Hip Hood: The District (Central Missouri)

Savor the intersection of artistic treasures and quirky indie culture in The District.

1. Missouri Theatre
Modeled after the Paris Opera House, Missouri Theatre is mid-Missouri’s only remaining pre-Depression Era movie palace and vaudeville stage. Built in the 1920s and beautifully restored in 2008, this jewel of Columbia is on the National Register of Historic Places. Marvel at its ba-roque, rococo style as you enjoy a world-class concert or a University of Missouri production. Make its grand foyer, ornate stage or rooftop patio the destination of your cocktail party, recep-tion or meetings.

2. Bleu
For an upscale lunch, brunch or dinner, make a beeline for Bleu. Plan a delicious, beautifully presented experience on the patio or in the lounge. The lower level of the restaurant has an outstanding meeting space, or have them cater at your location.

3. Orr Street Studios
A dramatic renovation turned three warehouses into the non-profit arts organization Orr Street Studios. The 950-square-foot reception space offers an unforgettable space for an indoor or outdoor performance. With capacity for about 200 people, guests can mingle amid giant art works that are actual 10-by-10-foot sliding doors of studios for working artists.

4. ARTlandish Gallery
Make time for a treasure hunt “where art comes to thrive” at ARTlandish. At first glance, it seems like a small gallery. Yet hidden downstairs, “the catacombs” blooms with wondrous crea-tions from 50 local artists. Meet a few artists at work as you wind your way along the under-ground pathway. In the back corner, a coffee shop awaits you.

5. The Heidelberg
A cornerstone of downtown since 1963, “The Berg” is a great casual pub alongside the Universi-ty of Missouri campus. Students and locals alike rely on its winning combination of tradition and quality. Kick back with beers and comfort food on the rooftop patio that seats up to 150, or book the banquet room for groups of 10 to 50.
