Zoom-In Q&A with Chris Jamison

Q&A with Chris Jamison (www.iamchrisjamison.com), Pittsburgh-born singer-songwriter and last year’s third place finisher on NBC’s The Voice.

How did Pittsburgh inspire you growing up?
As a kid, I was a part of many performing groups. In fifth grade, I joined the North Star Kids, performing various Broadway standards at different venues around Pittsburgh. That was my first experience singing in front of an audience, and I was so nervous at first. I soon gained confidence, though, and after two years I started taking classes at the historic Pittsburgh CLO musical theatre company. Performing around Pittsburgh with their group The Mini Stars gave me even more experience, including multiple shows at the renowned Benedum Center.

Without my musical upbringing in Pittsburgh, I would not be where I am today. I am extremely grateful for all of the opportunities this city continues to offer me, which helped me to become more comfortable on stage and more natural conversing with an audience.

How would you characterize the city’s music scene?
It’s a great scene that continues to thrive and grow, with activities and opportunities for people of all ages to perform and mature as a musical artist. Carnegie Mellon University and Point Park University are among the institutions offering incredible and versatile music programs, along with Duquesne University, where I took piano lessons and participated in a recording workshop.

What are some choice local music venues you would recommend for visiting groups?
I have spent a lot of time in the Cultural District, so I would recommend The Benedum Center, Heinz Hall and Byham Theater, to name a few. One week there may be a national tour of a Broadway show, the next a solo artist taking the stage, so groups can find all sorts of different music at these and other venues around the city.
