Charlotte’s South End, an area that was part of the nation’s first gold rush, remains a gem of a neighborhood today. Its rebirth came in the early 1990s, and the introduction of the LYNX Blue Line light rail in 2007 increased its popularity and brought reinvention that continues today. Groups visiting Charlotte will have fun exploring this ever-evolving enclave, which is home to breweries, shops, restaurants, galleries and more.
Atherton Market, where local farms, artisans and chefs sell everything from cheesecake (Jazzy Cheesecakes) and handcrafted jewelry (Skyeturtle Designs) to candles (Verve Candles) and chocolate-covered fruits (Madison Chocolatiers West), is a great place to begin a South End visit. Stop into Not Just Coffee for a morning caffeine boost to start the day.
Chef Alyssa’s Kitchen, located in Atherton Market, is a standout option for groups seeking a team-bonding activity. Among the healthy and sustainable hands-on cooking classes offered are “Paella Fiesta,” “Gourmet Grilled Cheese” and “Moroccan Cooking.” Hands-on classes are available for up to 20 people and demonstration-only classes accommodate larger groups.
Elder Gallery showcases the works of American artists in various mediums, including sculpture and painting. Attendees are welcome to browse the gallery, which has a spacious layout that is also well suited to accommodate business meetings, cocktail parties and more.
At Lark & Key Gallery and Boutique attendees will find an array of functional art pieces, including handmade vases and bowls, as well as whimsical paintings and jewelry.
The Unknown Brewing Company is open most days for tastings, offers tours a couple times per week and has a taproom that accommodates private parties. The menu of beers here includes Scratch & Sniff Aromatic IPA, Brown Ryed Girl India Brown Ale, Vehopciraptor Double IPA and Hospitali-Tea South Amber Ale, which is made in part with black tea leaves and orange blossom honey.
Private dining is available at Nan & Byron’s for either lunch or dinner. Groups sharing a meal here will find there is something for everyone on the menu, including burgers, tacos, soups and salads.
