Culture Q&A With Alan Ethridge

Alan Ethridge is the executive director of the Metropolitan Arts Council (MAC) in Greenville, S.C.

How does MAC support Greenville’s artistic and cultural scene?

Founded in 1973, MAC is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit arts-service organization dedicated to preserving and growing the cultural arts in Greenville County, and advancing the area’s cultural and economic vitality. Our mission is to provide funding and other vital services such as marketing, public relations and advocacy to individual artists, arts organizations and arts education programs.

Our programs include supporting arts providers and tourism groups to stimulate arts-related spending and position the region as a cultural destination.

What are some choice cultural options for Greenville groups?

Updated on MAC’s website, Greenville’s vast and diverse array of cultural offerings are virtually endless. Performances at the Peace Center are always phenomenal, be they Broadway shows or events by resident companies such as the Greenville Symphony Orchestra, South Carolina Children’s Theatre or Greenville Chorale.

The Warehouse Theatre and Centre Stage are also great options.

First Fridays, our monthly gallery crawl, showcases the talent of Greenville’s visual artists, while Artisphere, in May, is our nationally ranked spring arts festival, along with Greenville Open Studios in November.

On the north end of Downtown, Heritage Green is home to the Greenville County Museum of Art; Children’s Museum of the Upstate; Greenville Little Theatre; Hughes Library; Upcountry History Museum; and Sargent-Wilson MSG Museum & Gallery.

The new Greenville Center for Creative Arts has a strong presence in the visual arts scene.
