What are some landmark turning points in Greenville’s evolution?
Key visionaries have steered Greenville to its greatest triumphs. In 1815, Vardry McBee purchased sleepy Pleasantburg and transformed it into thriving Greenville through investment and philanthropy. Elected mayor in 1971, Max Heller desegregated the city and led the renewal and beautification of Main Street. Since 1995, Mayor Knox White has inspired the development of one of America’s most beautiful and successful downtowns.
How does its heritage enhance Greenville’s visitor appeal?
Dynamic ingredients, including Greenville’s rise as the textile capital of the world; its turnaround from defunct ghost town to thriving hub of international business and tourism; and abundant natural and cultural resources have all contributed to its enduring appeal and magnetic attraction.
