What does your job entail?
I serve as executive director for the Iowa Turfgrass Institute and as chapter executive officer to the Iowa Sports Turf Managers Association (ISTMA), Iowa Golf Course Superintendent’s Association and the Iowa Professional Lawn and Landscape Association. I am responsible for association management and event planning, and the annual Iowa Turfgrass Conference and Trade Show.
Describe your recent meeting in Coralville.
In January 2016, we held our annual Iowa Turfgrass Conference and Trade Show at the Coralville Marriott Hotel & Conference Center. There were 600 attendees, including speakers and exhibitors. The focus of the conference is on continuing education for all Turfgrass professionals. We also hosted over 300 in our Pesticide Applicator Training, which is required by the state of Iowa.
What did your attendees seem to enjoy the most?
The attendees enjoyed having the educational sessions and the tradeshow all in one location. In the sessions, we used a crescent round seating formation that attendees liked. During breaks, it gave them the opportunity to network and meet new people.
Did you use a unique off-site venue for a gathering?
The ISTMA members held their social at Backpocket Brewing Co., which is located a block away. They enjoyed the atmosphere, food and close proximity to the conference center.
Are there any fun activities you would recommend for groups meeting in Coralville?
Coralville is such a nice up-and-coming area. It is connected to Iowa City, the home of the Iowa Hawkeyes, so groups that enjoy campus nighttime activities will have a blast. Just down the road is Brown Deer Golf Club, a beautiful 18-hole golf course. And don’t forget one of the largest malls in Iowa, just down the interstate.
How does Coralville compare to other places where you have hosted meetings?
Coralville is awesome! The town is beautiful and the service everywhere you go is five-star. Everything you need in Coralville is within walking distance or a short drive.
Would you return/recommend Coralville to other planners?
I would highly recommend anyone looking in Eastern Iowa for an event host site to consider Coralville. The Coralville Marriott’s team is exceptional.
