Starwood Resort Reopens in Southern Portugal

ALGARVE, Portugal

The Luxury Collection Hotels & Resorts, part of Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, announced the official reopening of Pine Cliffs Hotel, a Luxury Collection Resort, Algarve.

Owned by United Investments Portugal, the cliff-top retreat recently completed an all-encompassing 18-month renovation that restored the Pine Cliffs Hotel, alongside the addition of the new contemporary Pine Cliffs Ocean Suites.

“The spectacular transformation of the iconic Pine Cliffs is testament to the collaborative and longstanding relationship we enjoy with United Investments Portugal,” said Michael Wale, president of Starwood Hotels & Resorts, Europe, Africa and Middle East. “This is without a doubt one of Starwood’s most significant developments this year, and ensures this very special resort firmly remains the definitive luxury destination in the Algarve for generations to come.”

All 217 guest rooms and suites, public areas and facilities had extensive renovations and now evoke Pine Cliffs’ Portuguese heritage with historic features such as the guest unit's headboards made of azulejos, traditional hand-painted tiles that were fired in the kilns of Lisbon’s Fabrica de Ceramica Constancia. Grand panels recounting the discoveries of Vasco de Gama and Ferdinand Magellan as well as a detailed map reproduction of the Mediterranean by famed medieval cartographer Giorgio Sideri adorn the walls of the lobby, while classic touches like terracotta floors can be found throughout the resort.

Spanning over 170 acres across the Algarve coastline, the resort boasts 11 different restaurants and bars under the supervision of Executive Chef Marco Alban, including the poolside seafood restaurant O Pescador, Beach Club on the golden shore of Praia da Falesia, Piri Piri Steak House and Zest, a new outlet offering guests an array of health-conscious drinks, snacks and dishes.

There is a new state-of-the-art, 10,000-square-foot spa, Serenity The Art of Well Being. In addition, the hotel offers six swimming pools, Porto Pirata, the region’s largest kids club, an Annabel Croft Tennis Academy, a nine-hole golf course with panoramic views, expansive gardens, numerous shops and boutiques, and more than 23,000 square feet of event and meeting space.

“Pine Cliff’s renovation truly is a cornerstone in The Luxury Collection brand’s investment effort to renovate some of the most iconic hotels around the globe,” said Meredith Dichter, global brand director of The Luxury Collection Hotels & Resorts. “We are thrilled to deliver enhanced accommodations in the Algarve, a perennial favorite of global explorers, to our guests.”

Alongside the hotel is the new Pine Cliffs Ocean Suites, comprising 148 one- and two-bedroom luxury apartments complete with personalized butler service and full access to all of Pine Cliffs’ facilities.

“We are delighted to strengthen our successful partnership with Starwood Hotels & Resorts, which over the past 24 years saw Pine Cliffs be established as the leading resort in Portugal and one of the finest in Europe,” said Carlos Leal, general manager, United Investments Portugal. “We are very proud to preserve the distinctive indigenous DNA of this iconic hotel, while at the same time revitalizing it and creating a new benchmark for luxury seafront living in Portugal with the introduction of the new Pine Cliffs Ocean Suites.”
