Drinking It In

If the words “Caribbean cocktails” bring to mind creamy concoctions of pineapple, coconut and paper umbrellas, you’re not alone. But there’s more to discover beyond the margarita and hurricane glasses. Local hotels and tour operators can help lift your spirits with mixology classes featuring traditional tropical drinks as well as some creative alternatives.

How about some “Molecular Cocktails,” courtesy of the all-inclusive Sandos Cancun, which offers an interactive drink-making experience where groups learn how to turn average beverages into one-of-a-kind creations featuring pearls of liquid, flavored foams, smoke shows and more. Groups of up to 30 people work on two cocktails, accompanied by savory bites.

Offered throughout the islands, cocktail mixology classes from Caribbean Culinary Tours encourage teambuilding as groups learn how to prepare authentic Caribbean cocktails while also learning about the history of rum and tropical fruits. The two- to three-hour classes include local finger food for nibbling while creating.
