UNICO Hotel Riviera Maya is to open in the first quarter of 2017. The 448-room, all-inclusive, adults-only property will have an 11,603-square-foot ballroom and 10 breakout meeting and event rooms, as well as five restaurants, six bars, three swimming pools and a wellness center.

In September, Small Luxury Hotels of the World added three properties in Mexico: Chable Spa & Resort, in the Yucatan state, and Stara Hamburgo and Stara San Angel Inn, both in Mexico City.

SECTUR, Mexico’s Ministry of Tourism, plans to initiate a new hotel rating system, providing a set of guidelines to better classify hotels. The new system is to replace the current self-regulated tradition that has allowed Mexico’s hotels to rate themselves.

Grupo Vidanta is wrapping up construction on the Grand Mayan, located at Puerto Penasco in the state of Sonora, on the Sea of Cortez. In addition, the company plans to debut a Cirque du Soleil theme park in 2018 near Puerto Vallarta, and is to open a new beach club and two restaurants at the Grand Mayan Los Cabos.

G6 Hospitality, parent company of Motel 6 and Studio 6 brands, is opening three Hotel 6 properties; new hotels will open in Queretaro and Leon in 2017, and a third debuts in Irapuato in 2018.

NIZUC Resort & Spa, on Mexico’s Caribbean coast near Cancun, has expanded its Peruvian-inspired restaurant, Ni, by 30 percent to accommodate larger group events.

Mexico City will welcome yet another luxury hotel in 2019, when the 153-room Ritz-Carlton, Mexico City debuts as part of the Chapultepec Uno mixed-use project on Paseo de la Reforma, one of the city’s most prominent boulevards.

Grupo Autofin is working on a number of new developments in Acapulco, including renovations to the Pierre Mundo Imperial and Princess Mundo Imperial hotels, as well as construction of three new hotels: The Hotel Prince by Mundo Imperial, Hotel Marques Boutique, Residences and Luxury Condominiums, an Only You Boutique Hotel and an eco-amusement park called Aventura Guerrero. The projects are to be completed by 2022. In addition, Acapulco is to debut a new, $30 million airport terminal in 2018.
