Los Cabos, which reported growth in arrivals of nearly 19 percent in February 2017 compared to the previous year, is planning on adding 4,742 hotel rooms between 2017 and 2020. Among the newest properties are the 60-room Chileno Bay Resort & Residences (https://chilenobay.aubergeresorts.com), 206-room Grand Velas Los Cabos, 187-room Krystal Grand Los Cabos and 128-room Solaz Los Cabos hotel. In November, Palace Resorts is slated to debut the 373-room Le Blanc Spa Resort Los Cabos, which will have more than 14,000 square feet of meeting and event space.
In March, Palace Resorts unveiled The Grand at Moon Palace Cancun, the result of a $450 million upgrade.
New in nearby Riviera Maya is the 436-room Unico Hotel, an all-inclusive property with five restaurants, three lounge bars and indoor/outdoor meeting and event space. Also new is the 60-room Live Aqua Boutique Resort Playa del Carmen (www.liveaqua.com). In addition, Karisma Hotels & Resorts (www.karismahotels.com) recently introduced 30 over-water bungalows at Dorado Maroma, and the Thompson Playa del Carmen (www.thompsonhotels.com) debuted a new 27-room Beach House, two blocks from the main property.
Chef Corey Collins recently introduced a new Chef’s Table experience at the Grand Hyatt Playa del Carmen Resort, featuring a custom-designed menu prepared in front of the diners. The Grand Hyatt is also launching a Gallery Dinner series that combines fine art and cuisine, with a private space for cocktails, followed by dinner in a venue decorated with original artwork.
This year, the Grand Fiesta Americana Puerto Vallarta invested more than half-million dollars to create a marine rock wall that will allow for a larger beach by reducing sand erosion. The property is expanding its culinary options with the addition of a traditional taco stand at casual Shore Grill.
The Riviera Nayarit is preparing to welcome a number of new hotels and resort complexes, including the 480-room Krystal Grand (www.krystal-hotels.com), which is the result of an expansion of the hotel Bel Air and will feature a new convention center when complete at the end of this year. Also on tap is the 250-room Fairmont Costa Canuva, which opens in 2018 with a golf course designed by Greg Norman and Lorena Ochoa; the 130-room Rosewood Mandarina, which opens in 2019; and the 145-room One&Only Mandarina, which has not confirmed an opening date. In addition, a Cirque du Soleil park will open in 2019 at Vidanta Nuevo Vallarta.
Posadas has confirmed plans to build the Grand Fiesta Americana Acapulco Diamante, a property with about 428 rooms located next to the upscale La Isla Acapulco Shopping Village located between the Acapulco International Airport and the city; an opening date has not been announced.
Groups looking for excitement in Acapulco can consider Xtasea, a new attraction owned by Mundo Imperial Acapulco and billed as the world’s longest over-the-ocean zipline.
