Going Local in Guatemala

Tucked away near the ruins of Tikal, Uaxactun and Yaxha, in the middle of the Peten jungle of Guatemala, is Las Lagunas Boutique Hotel. The eco-friendly property unveiled a new full-service spa that features a reception area, beauty salon, treatment rooms, steam room, pool and treatments inspired by the Mayan culture.

The new wellness facility offers a space to rejuvenate after experiencing one of the activities on or off-site offered to groups and guests. Taking advantage of the location, guided tours include hiking the historical ruins, kayaking the Quexil Lagoon and fishing for local blanco fish.

Back on-property, a museum recently opened at the hotel.

“[The museum] is actually the first and proper museum in all of Peten that features authorized collections of archaeological artifacts and includes a rotating display of 1,000 pieces in total, with 600 displayed at a time,” explained Edgar Castillo, owner of Las Lagunas. “Most of the pieces from Peten are Mayan and date from 450 B.C. to 900 A.D.”
This property features overwater bungalow suites, a restaurant and meeting space, including a conference room that is adorned with its own collection of archaeological artifacts. The private on-property dock that hangs over the lagoon can be used for private events, along with a pool deck and adjacent outdoor terrace.
