Hip Hood: Lakeview District

Visiting groups with a free evening in Birmingham will have fun checking out the historic Lakeview District, which borders downtown.

Here they will find a great selection of places to grab a bite, sip a craft beer or delicious cocktail and listen to some live music.

“The neighborhood continues to attract restaurants and nightclubs for an interesting selection of dining and entertainment,” said Dilcy Windham Hilley, vice president of marketing and communications for the Greater Birmingham CVB.

Babalu Tapas & Tacos @2808 7th Av.e South, which opened in 2014, is one example of the neighborhood’s recent entrants.

At press time, the featured seasonal cocktail at Babalu was a strawberry-key lime margarita, which sounds like a refreshing choice to enjoy while waiting for Fierce Shrimp Tapas, Carnitas Tacos and other popular menu items.

At Sky Castle at 2808 7th Ave. South, a sports bar with televisions lining the walls, the menu includes everything from lamb burgers to shrimp and grits. Meanwhile, Jack Brown’s Beer & Burger Joint at 2811 7th Ave. South, offers more than 100 craft brews and award-winning burgers, including The Greg Brady, which is topped with house-made mac and cheese and Martin’s barbecue potato chips.

Five at 744 29th St. South, a bar that also offers lunch and dinner menus, Oasis Bar at 2807 7th Ave. South, which stages live music performances, and Lou’s Pub & Package Store @726 29th St. South, a favorite neighborhood bar/liquor store, are all popular places that locals would recommend to out-of-towners.

Another neighborhood hot spot is Tin Roof @2709 7th Ave. South, where groups will find a tasty menu and live music. Attendees can either just drop by Tin Roof for a casual toast after a meeting or rent it for a group event. The venue accommodates groups of up to 550 people and will work with planners on a customized menu, entertainment and corporate branding.

Among the neighborhood’s other eateries are Slice Stone Pizza & Brewhouse @725 29th St. South, where the menu features pizzas, salads and cocktails including sangria and pink grapefruit margaritas, and Hattie B’s Hot Chicken @2808 7th Ave. South, where groups can share a pile of wings and indulge in banana pudding for dessert.
