Zoom In: Dawn Yager

Dawn Yager , Owner // Shanti Yoga // Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Please share a little about Shanti Yoga.

Shanti Yoga, which welcomes students of all levels, is the longest-running yoga studio on the Grand Strand. Our colorful and warm space is located one block from the ocean. We offer yoga classes as well as workshops and meditation. During the summer months, we offer beach yoga as well.

Do you consider Myrtle Beach a destination that promotes wellness?

Myrtle Beach is a beautiful place to live and work. There is never a shortage of nice weather, things to do and places to eat. The people are kind and welcoming, making it a very easy place to call home.

In the 20 years that I’ve lived here, I’ve seen the steps the city has taken to make Myrtle Beach a healthy, active city. We have many well-equipped gyms and workout studios, and we host marathons.

Do you offer any group experiences?

Shanti Yoga offers group classes seven days a week. Choose from our early morning classes before the meeting or any other classes throughout the day. Private sessions are also available for groups.

Can you recommend any other wellness experiences in Myrtle Beach?

One of the very best amenities we have in Myrtle Beach is the ocean. Salt water is healing for your body and mind, so try to at least get your feet in the ocean. We also have a beautiful state park that your group could visit to spend some time in nature. When we feel stress, we really need to get into nature.

There are also numerous spas. My favorite is Hibiscus Spa at Marriott Resort & Spa at Grande Dunes.

In late summer, don’t miss Coastal Uncorked, a food and wine festival, and in the fall look for farm-to-table events that showcase local food and chefs.

Do you have a couple tips for busy people who are considering achieving a better work/life balance?

When you start to make balance a priority, you will see how all the little things that have been bothering you start seeming less important.

Here are a few things to start with:

  • When you wake up in the morning DO NOT check your phone first. Get up, do what you need to and sit down in silence for five minutes, visualizing your day with ease and happiness.
  • Put down your phone and turn off the TV during meals. Focus on the quality of the food.
  • Try Pranayama, a simple yogi breathing practice. When you slow your breath, you slow your thoughts, balance your emotions and settle the mind. Pranayama is a beautiful practice to help you become less emotionally reactive and more aware/present.
