Delta cancelled at least 800 flights in Atlanta as Irma—downgraded to a tropical storm—made its way toward Georgia and Alabama. Despite being downgraded, the storm still has the potential to cause damage.
As reported by USA Today, “[Hartsfield – Jackson Atlanta International Airport] is the busiest in the world and home to the largest hub for Delta Air Lines.” Delta has already warned of major disruptions in travel as the day (and week) goes on.
Nearly 900 flights have been canceled so far in total at the Atlanta airport, with more cancellations likely to be announced throughout the day. Some flights were also beginning to cancel in Birmingham, Ala., due to complications from Irma.
USA Today put the total cancellations related to Hurricane Irma “at 14,000 and counting.” A "trickle of [flights] to South Florida" were expected later on Monday.
Miami International Airport and Fort Lauderdale – Hollywood International Airport remained closed on Monday, Sept. 11 as the airports assessed hurricane-related damage, according to the Miami Herald. Orlando International Airport was also still closed on Monday.
Miami International spokeswoman Karla Cobreiro said in a statement that after Monday’s damage assessment, airport personnel will determine if passenger flights can resume on Tuesday. The Fort Lauderdale – Hollywood Airport has not yet issued an update on when it expects to resume flights. Neither has Orlando.
Palm Beach International Airport was scheduled to reopen at noon Monday with limited service.
