Checking In: Golden Years

Whether referring to its population or landscape, California prides itself on the diversity that resonates throughout the state, from its Latin American enclaves to its famed Chinatown districts, from its quintessential palm-fringed beaches to its myriad mountain peaks.

In this issue of Meetings Today California, resident Californian Maria Lenhart navigates all 163,695 square miles of the Golden State in search of what is new or in the works.

In her story “A Warm Welcome,” she consults with the state’s tourism marketing organization, Visit California, for details about the upward trajectory of business and leisure travel, including climbing hotel occupancy rates, visitor spending and a new state branding campaign, “All Dreams Welcome,” focusing on the international market.

In “Booming Bay,” Lenhart traverses the tech-savvy Bay Area, including Silicon Valley, burgeoning East Bay communities, Wine Country and, of course, San Francisco, which is deep in the process of expanding its hotel and convention center offerings.

Heading down to SoCal, “Southern Exposure” spotlights the revitalization of Downtown Los Angeles, as well as a slew of new hotels and convention space throughout the beach cities, Anaheim, San Diego and other locales.

Away from the coast, the inland areas of the state offer their own allures, as Lenhart documents in “Interior Treasures,” whether it’s a new basketball arena in the state’s capital, Sacramento, or finding a boutique property in Palm Springs.

For a break from the big cities and tourist magnets, California boasts a wealth of secluded getaways, as specified in “Sweet Retreats.”
