KANSAS CITY, Mo.
Voters in Kansas City, Mo., approved a plan to spend $1 billion to replace the current layout of the Kansas City International Airport with a single terminal. The measure was passed by a 3-to-1 margin on Nov. 7.
According to the Associated Press, supporters, including a majority of city officials and business leaders, promised voters that “the new terminal would be paid for by the airlines and user fees, not tax dollars.”
The Kansas City Airport’s current 45-year-old design features three, horseshoe-shaped terminals. Supporters of the $1 billion airport project felt the current design is outdated and several officials noted that it does not meet post-9/11 security requirements. In addition, many felt the airport gives a poor first impression of the city.
Initial drawings for the new terminal by Edgemoor were described to show an H-shaped structure with two concourses and 35 gates. Arrivals and departures would be on separate levels with curbside service.
The Kansas City Star reached out to City Manager Troy Schulte who said “the plan right now [for construction] is to break ground in the fall of 2018 and have a new terminal up and running by late 2021.”
