The U.S. State Department recently issued a Travel Alert for U.S. citizens traveling to Europe due to “the heightened risks of terrorist attacks” through Jan. 31, 2018, particularly during the holiday season. The State Department added that U.S. citizens should exercise caution at holiday festivals and events.
The 2017-2018 Europe Travel Alert is similar to an alert issued last year by the U.S. State Department. The alert mentions “widely-reported incidents in France, Russia, Sweden, the United Kingdom, Spain, and Finland demonstrate [the potential] for terrorist attacks in Europe.” The alert also refers to attacks at a Christmas market in Berlin in December and a nightclub in Istanbul, Turkey on New Year’s Eve.
The State Department’s Europe Travel Alert also included the following message:
“While local governments continue counterterrorism operations, the Department remains concerned about the potential for future terrorist attacks. U.S. citizens should always be alert to the possibility that terrorist sympathizers or self-radicalized extremists may conduct attacks with little or no warning.”
