Mountain MEALS

West Virginia is also home to some standout dining opportunities for groups interested in stepping out for a meal.

In Charleston is Paterno’s at the Park, a long-standing favorite that offers private dining and buyout options.

Located within Appalachian Power Park, home of West Virginia Power baseball (the Minor League Baseball affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates), Paterno’s at the Park serves up steaks and family-style Italian cuisine, including everything from garlic bread and calamari to lasagna and shrimp scampi.

Also in Charleston is Bistro at the Barge, which offers a fine dining experience in a quiet and luxe atmosphere.

Set aboard an actual river barge that’s docked downriver from downtown Charleston, the Bistro at the Barge seats approximately 75 people, has a semi-private room and is available for buyout.

The menu here includes raw, fried and baked oysters, hand-cut steaks, duck, scallops and salads.

Bourbon Prime, an impressive new eatery that opened last year inside the Morgantown Marriott at Waterfront Place, provides top-notch service and cuisine, including locally sourced trout and grass-fed beef.

The restaurant also offers a comprehensive bourbon bar featuring everything from Basil Hayden’s and Buffalo Trace to Maker’s Mark and Wild Turkey.

In downtown Lewisburg in Greenbrier County is The Asylum, another newer entrant on the state’s cuisine roster that opened in 2014.

The Asylum, which welcomes groups that are interested in an easygoing atmosphere, offers several levels, outdoor seating, a lineup of live music and a menu starring upscale comfort food and craft beers.

A favorite with diners is the option to BYOB, or build your own burger. They also serve sandwiches, including pork BBQ, and several entrees, including fish and chips.

And Lewis County is home to the Jane Lew-based Hickory House Restaurant, which specializes in smoked barbecue.

The restaurant, which has a private dining room area and an additional rental space for larger parties, is famous throughout the state for its barbeque and hot sweet pickles.
